In conversation with Francine Zorn Trachtenberg

At a time when “college” has become synonymous with skyrocketing tuition, difficult enrollment, campus violence, alcohol and drug abuse, and campus scandals, the former president of The George Washington University tells it like it really is. Educated at Columbia, Yale and Harvard universities, with a membership in Phi Beta Kappa, more than fifteen honorary doctorates, four books and numerous published articles, Stephen Joel Trachtenberg is one of the leading voices in American higher education. Using wonderful anecdotes from his own life, Trachtenberg explains with compassion and humor the insight he has gained from the halls of learning. This book is a major work about the importance of sustaining our nation's natural brain trust.

Stephen Joel Trachtenberg is President Emeritus of The George Washington University and University Professor of Public Service. He served as the 15th president of The George Washington University for nearly two decades, from 1988 to 2007. He has written five books, including two published in June 2008: Big Man On Campus: A University President Speaks Out on Higher Education and A Letter to the President of the United States on Higher Education. His other books include Reflections on Higher Education, Thinking Out Loud and Speaking His Mind.

Francine Zorn Trachtenberg is President Emeritus of the Washington DCJCC and is on the Board of Directors for Cultural Tourism DC and the Washington chapter of the American Jewish Committee. She is a former senior vice president of WETA, was manager of major construction projects at the University of Hartford, and has served on the boards of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, the Humanities Council of Washington, DC, WETA, Connecticut Public Broadcasting, the Hartford Jewish Community Center and Boston University.
