Thumpin’ It: The Use and Abuse of the Bible in Today’s Presidential Politics, looks at how the left, right and everyone in between have used and misused the Bible to advance their own political causes and careers. In this engaging book, Jacques Berlinerblau looks at the recent history of how Scripture has influenced public policy, including debates about the environment, abortion, stem cell research and foreign policy. Berlinerblau also pays close attention to how recent U.S. presidents have employed the Bible and examines how each of the major candidates in the 2008 presidential elections use—and often misuse—the Bible in their race to the White House.
Jacques Berlinerblau is the director of the Program for Jewish Civilization at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, as well as the author of the blog “The God Vote,” which explores the role of religion in the 2008 election. He has published four previous books: Heresy in the University: The Black Athena Controversy, Responsibility of American Intellectuals and The Secular Bible: Why Nonbelievers Must take Religion Seriously.
